Valencell licensed its PerformTek Precision Biometrics technology to LG Electronics for a new LG Bluetooth heart rate monitoring earphone that will track fitness biometrics.

Introduced at the 2014 International CES, the new LG earphone powered by PerformTek will use the patented sensor technology to monitor users' heart rate, distance and speed, as well as calories burned. The information will then be wirelessly delivered in real-time to a mobile app on users' smartphones. The seamless nature of PerformTek sensor technology allows consumers to use the LG earphone for monitoring their biometrics while listening to music or talking on the phone.

Valencell claims PerformTek Precision Biometrics measures more real-time biometrics than any other fitness monitoring technology. The company seeks to license the technology to companies like LG  that are looking to gain share in the growing mobile health and fitness market through a three-part PerformTek licensing package.

“Having one of the foremost global consumer electronics brands incorporate PerformTek sensor technology into its products reaffirms that PerformTek is the only fitness biometric technology proven to be accurate and consistent across different activities and environments, while still being small enough to fit in audio earbuds. Consumers trust LG to deliver pioneering innovations, and this product will help people achieve their performance and fitness goals while providing a high-quality audio experience,” said Valencell President Dr. Steven LeBoeuf.

Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Raleigh, NC, Valencell develops wearable fitness monitoring technology and licenses this technology to consumer electronics manufacturers, mobile device and accessory makers, and sports and fitness brands and gaming companies for integration into their products. Valencell's PerformTek sensor technology seamlessly integrates into wearable devices, such as audio earbuds, armbands and wristbands, and connects with smartphone apps people are already using while exercising. It measures more real-time biometric and physiological data than any other fitness monitor with a high degree of accuracy and consistency, and uses that data to give people meaningful health and fitness assessments. PerformTek technology has been validated through clinical studies at Duke University and other independent research institutions.
