The retail market in the U.K. continues to brighten in May according to the most recent report from the British Retail Consortium. Comparable store results rose 3.7% in May and total retail sales reportedly grew 6.5% for the month. The BRC cited clothing, footwear and garden furniture as the key growth categories.

The BRC said the results were “deceptively strong” and benefited from warmer weather. Many shoppers had delayed purchases in March and April due to wet and cold weather. Euro 2004, the European Football (Soccer) Championship that started this last weekend, was also seen as a key driver for sales of apparel and televisions, a trend seen strengthening in June.
