The Timberland Company will open its first store in San Francisco in nine years.

The store, which officially opens on Friday, April 29, will be located at 845 Market Street (part of the Westfield San Francisco Centre, with Market Street access).

“As a brand rooted in the outdoors, were extremely excited to bring our authentic New England heritage to the West coast,” said John Pazzani, vice president of retail and e-commerce for Timberland. “San Francisco is one of this country’s great outdoor gateway cities and – like our home-base of New Hampshire – offers easy access to the mountains as well as the ocean. Our new Market Street location is the perfect place for Bay Area consumers to get the Timberland gear they need to explore, wherever their outdoor adventures may take them.”

The new 2,300 sq. foot retail space is designed to reflect the company’s commitment to sustainability, and is one of the brand’s most eco-conscious stores to-date. Build-out features include the use of reclaimed wood and industrial machinery (used for table bases); “Ecotech” recycled stoneware floor tiles; FSC certified woods; reduced-wattage LED lighting (the sales floor is entirely LED-lit, a first for Timberland); Energy Star-eligible equipment and appliances; low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints; and water-conserving plumbing fixtures. The space also features a unique, San Francisco-themed mural celebrating “green spaces” throughout the Bay Area (in the shape of the Golden Gate Bridge).

Beyond the April 29 store opening, “Grand Opening Weekend” festivities will take place Friday, May 20 through Sunday, May 22, featuring in-store DJ and live music performances. During this weekend, customers can also begin voting in-store for their favorite of four different San Francisco-based environmental organizations (to be announced in the coming weeks). The winning organization will receive a $2,500 grant from Timberland. Voting ends on May 31.

Grand Opening Weekend will also be the last chance to enter an in-store giveaway for two premium, inflatable stand-up paddleboards (iSUPs) and paddles from C4 Waterman (www.c4waterman.com) – one winner for all prizes. The drawing will be held on the last day of Grand Opening Weekend, Sunday, May 22. Consumers are encouraged to stop by the store beginning on April 29 for more details and to enter.

Additional Timberland retail locations are scheduled to open in New York City (Herald Square) and other key markets this year – all part of a major retail expansion effort for 2011. Most recently, the brand opened a new store in its backyard of Boston, on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17).
