The North Face has quietly closed its outlet store in Berkeley, CA, according to local reports. The store, at 1238 Fifth Street, opened its doors in 1975.
The store closed on July 12, according to Berkeleyside.
KTVU noted that The North Face’s only presence in the Greater Bay Area is its store locations in Livermore and Pleasanton. The brand closed its downtown San Francisco flagship at 180 Post Street in March 2024.
North Face was founded in San Francisco in 1966 and relocated to Berkeley in 1968 after Kenneth “Hap” Klopp acquired the business in 1968. It remained in Berkeley but then relocated to San Leandro in 1995 when it relocated to San Leandro and then relocated to Denver, CO, along with several other of parent VF Corp, brands in 2019. VF acquired The North Face in 2000.
