Six people were injured Tuesday morning when a chairlift derailed from a lift at Sugarloaf Mountain resort in Maine.

The injuries occurred when skiers in five chairs fell 25 to 30 feet to the ground. None of the injuries were thought to be life threatening.

While victims were transported to nearby hospitals, ski patrol worked to lower to the ground more than 200 skiers – including a CNN reporter – stranded near the eighth tower of the Spillway East chairlift. They were all evacuated by 1 p.m. EST, or within about two hours of the 10:30 am accident.

The accident followed the arrival of 20 inches of snow throughout much of New England, where many resort operators and snowsports retailers had been discouraged by a lack of snow.
