Stein Mart, Inc. today reported comparable store sales for the four-week period ended Jan. 28 decreased 3.9 percent. Total sales for the January four-week period were $60.1 million, a decrease of 4.3 percent from $62.8 million in the same period last year.

In January, ladies' casual sportswear, men's furnishings and ladies' accessories had the strongest sales performance, while gifts, men's sportswear, women's and social dresses experienced weaker trends. Geographically, January sales were better than Company trend in California and the Northeast, while sales were weaker in the Gulf States and Midwest.

The company had 262 stores in operation at the end of January compared to 264 at the same time last year. No new stores were opened or existing stores closed during January.
