Specialized has launched an e-bike for the European market called Turbo that travels up to 45 kph and uses a battery than can recharge in two hours. The bike will not be made available in the United States, where bikes that travel in excess of 20 mph are regulated as motor vehicles, greatly adding cost.

About 50 select Specialized delaers in Europe are now offering test rides of the $7,300 Turbo, which has a rugged, but sleek design optimized for speed and urban environments.

Its lithium ion battery cells are incorporated into an oversized down tube, making it difficult to distinguish from a non-motorized bike from a distance. It also features an oversized thru-axle to facilitate rear wheel changes which can be very difficult on conventionally designed e-bikes. All cables are routed in via grooves built into the tubes to preserve its racy aesthetic. The bike features a carbon alloy fork, a SRAM rear derailleur, integrated head and taillights, wireless power control, cycling computer and regenerative Magura brakes that recharge the battery when engaged.
