SIERRA magazine took home the award for the Best Special Theme Issue for a Consumer Publication for its March/April 2004 “Wild America” issue. Senior Editor Paul Rauber and Production Manager Chuck Baldwin were at the Western Publications Association's annual awards banquet in Los Angeles to accept the award.

“This issue was a rich mix of outdoor enjoyment, insight, and activism,” says Joan Hamilton, SIERRA's Editor-in-Chief. “There were fine photographs and tales of journeys to intriguing wild places. There were also calls to action for people who want to defend our natural heritage.”

SIERRA was also a finalist in the following categories:

  • Best Politics or Social Issues Issue for the September/October 2004 issue on Election 2004
  • Best Public Service Article for “The Cost of Doing Business” in the May/June 2004 issue

Over the past two decades, SIERRA has received 24 awards and more than 90 award nominations from magazine professionals, including the American Society of Magazine Editors, Folio magazine, and the Western Publications Association. It has won four of the WPA's best-in-category Maggie awards for coverage of political and social issues and three Maggies for outstanding public service journalism.
