Sierra Design said that it will expand use of its DriDown hydrophobic finish to 80 percent of its sleeping gas and all its 2013 technical apparel now that third-party testing shows it outperforms competing technologies.

DriDown is applied to down plumes to increase performance in the presence of moisture, outperforms the leading hydrophobic down competitor, staying dry 2.5 times longer and retaining 39 percent more loft in the presence of moisture during comprehensive, according to third-party lab testing conducted by California Down and Feather Testing Laboratory.

Sierra Designs says it has worked closely with labs such as SGS North America, Inc., California Down and Feather Testing Laboratory, and International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory to establish test methodologies and set industry standards for comparing the performance of various hydrophobic down insulations.

“Not all hydrophobic down is created equal, and we have independent, third-party test results to prove it,” said Michael Glavin, Vice President for Sierra Designs.  “When we launched DriDown™ last winter, we established ourselves as an industry leader and these test results only enhance our position.  We’re dedicated to DriDown and will introduce it into all of our new for 2013 down products.”

DriDown will be introduced into ultralight sleeping bags, expedition sleeping bags, and down apparel.
