The SGMA congratulated Abby Wambach, a 2009 SGMA National Health Through Fitness Day Participant, and all her teammates on the U.S. Women’s World Cup team for their determination and tenacity to pull off an extraordinary defeat over Brazil Sunday in the 2011 World Cup.

In a post game interview, Wambach said, “This is what being an American is all about. We never quit, never gave up and I knew all we needed was one shot.”

“This epitomizes the true American spirit and one that we can all teach our children,” said SGMA President Tom Cove. “If this is what participating in sports does for you, then any parent that does not pay attention is really missing out for their child.”

This was the same sentiment that Wambach used throughout the SGMA’s 2009 National Health Through Fitness (NHTF) Day when she joined industry leaders and physical activity advocates on Capitol Hill to request Congressional support for 2 SGMA physical activity initiatives, the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Bill and the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act, SGMA noted in its statement.
