Basis, a health tracker brand owned by Intel Company, issued a safety recall of all its Basis Peak watches, recommending consumers stop wearing the devices immediately as they can overheat and burn or blister the skin surface.

Basis Senior VP & GM Josh Walden explained, “It is important that you stop using your watch immediately and return it. Although we are stopping support for Basis Peak immediately, you can access your data until December 31, 2016. After that date, the Basis Peak services will be turned off. Once we shut down the services, your watch will no longer be able to sync, which will cause it to stop working.”

To return the device and obtain a refund, customers worldwide can visit support.mybasis.com.

So far, a small number of Basis Peak consumers have reported discomfort, blistering or burns on their wrist under the watch body. An initial announcement of the issue was made on June 13, 2016, and since that time Basis has looked for ways to resolve the issue. At the time of its initial announcement, the known reported cases involved approximately 0.2 percent of the watches sold.

Basis had hoped to update the software on its Peak watches to address the problem. Unfortunately, they were not able to develop such a solution “without completely compromising the experience,” the company said.

The Basis Peak watch was manufactured from August 2014 to July 2015, and offered for sale from November 2014 until June 2016. This recall affects all Basis Peak watches, regardless of date of manufacture or sale. All watches included in the recall can be found here.
