The number of American consumers visiting a bike shop declined by 17 percent from 2012 to 2014 and the number who visited a bike shop, but purchased a bicycle from a discount/mass merchant increased by 117 percent, according to the latest edition of the American Bicyclist Study Retail Landscape Report.

The report, which was released Oct. 26 by Gluskin Townley Group, is based on consumer research that was conducted during 2015 and covers the 2014 calendar year – and it compares the 2014 Retail Landscape for Bicycle to the data we published about the 2012 Retail Landscape for Bicycles.

The report also found that the number of adults who visited a bike shop, and went on to purchase a bicycle from a bike shop fell by 20 percent.

And adults who visited a bike shop and went on to purchase from an online retailer such as Amazon also declined by 36 percent!

Glusin Townley is selling a PDF version of the 86-pages report, which includes 60 pages of tables, for $499, although NBDA and TBC retail and supplier members are eligible for discounts.

Gluskin Townley will present a free webinar on the report Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6:00 PM Eastern.
