Australia’s largest sporting goods retailer, Rebel Sport, reported their five-month YTD sales numbers increased 8% to A$108.5 million (US $79.9 million). Excluding the Glue lifestyle stores, the core sporting goods stores posted a sales increase of 7.6%. Comparable store sales for the company increased 0.1%.

The company said that comps would have been higher, but a full week of their yearly clearance sale was included in last year’s numbers, whereas this year the sale was concluded before the start of the fiscal year.
“July and August 2002 also experienced un-seasonal promotional activity as a result of the Soccer World Cup, and the three months ended 27 September 2003 saw strong competitor activity with aggressive pre-summer discounting,” said a company spokesperson.
