Patagonia has hired Dean Carter as Vice President for Human Resources and Shared Services.

In his new role, Carter will provide strategic leadership and direction of Patagonia’s global human resources, finance and legal teams. He’ll report to CEO Rose Marcario and be charged with developing initiatives to support Patagonia’s nearly 2,000 employees worldwide in carrying out their mission.

Carter brings a wealth of global human resources and business leadership to Patagonia. In his most recent role as Chief Human Resources Officer with Sears Holdings, Inc., Carter has supported more than 220,000 employees in the United States and Asia and partnered directly with more than 30 Business Unit Presidents. He also was chairman of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. Foundation.

Carter previously served as the Chief Human Resources Officer at Fossil Inc., for nine years where he was the top HR officer supporting over 8,000 employees across 23 countries during a period of significant international expansion.

“Dean will elevate our game in our objective to expand our influence and develop our team, while remaining true to the values of environmental and social activism,” said Marcario. “I’m looking forward to partnering with him to support and grow our organization and the people who push us to embody our mission every day.”

Carter is an avid hiker, snowboarder and swimmer and he looks forward to getting in the ocean more often once he arrives in Ventura.

He has a BS in speech/organizational communication from the University of Texas at Austin and is a Workforce Science Fellow of Northwest University School of Law in Chicago. In 2013 Carter was awarded the Top 10 Breakaway HR Leaders by the Global HR Summit.
