Patagonia made a splash on Black Friday with a full-page ad in the New York Times urging readers customers not to shop.

The ad featured a picture of a Patagonia fleece jacket and carried the headline “Don't Buy This Jacket” in bold letters.

“Because Patagonia wants to be in business for a good long time – and leave a world inhabitable for our kids – we want to do the opposite of every other business today. We ask you to buy less and to reflect before you spend a dime on this jacket or anything else,” read the ad, which can be viewed here.

Patagonia sent out the same message on its website and to the hundreds of thousands of customers on its e-mail list as part of its Common Threads Initiative, which urges customers to Reduce, Repair, Resuse and Recycle products to minimize the impact of their consumption on the planet.
