Sherpa Adventure Gear CEO Tashi Sherpa, who was in Nepal at the time of the devastating avalanche said, “Approximately 26 children have been left behind by the unsung heroes who died on April 18th. The outpouring of emotions coming to us from around the globe strengthens our purpose to help future generations. People have asked us how to help.   We can help by supporting the children of stricken families who lost a father and now have no other means to pay for school.”

In addition to donations, Sherpa Adventure Gear is setting aside 10 percent of May sales at its Kathmandu, Nepal retail store towards this cause.   Sales in May from Sherpa Adventure Gear’s products at Alpine Ascents International’s gear shop in Seattle, Washington will also benefit the program.

Education is expensive in Nepal and schooling is financially out of reach for most families.  According to Tashi Sherpa, costs range from $400 a year for a school in the remote Khumbu villages near Everest and up to $2,600 a year for a boarding school that offers the best education possible in Nepal.

Sherpa Adventure Gear, since it was founded in 2003, has always dedicated a portion of every sale for the education of Sherpa children and raises additional funds through special events.

In May 2012, the company furthered its commitment to its cause by creating an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization called the Paldorje Education Fund.   Today, approximately 30 deserving children benefit from the hope and promise of an education from primary school through secondary school, and for some, through college. Recipients include Sherpa children from the Everest region, as well as the sons and daughters of committed employees of Sherpa Adventure Gear who have contributed to the company’s success.  The charitable organization is named after Tashi Sherpa’s family clan name.
