The Active Network, Inc. said online registration for running events taking place in the United States in 2009 was up more than 15% from the previous year.

The company claims to be the largest provider of sports registration software for endurance events and organizations in North America, including thousands of running events annually. The findings, compiled by Active Networks ActiveEndurance division, compared online registration for running events held in both 2008 and 2009 from January through December.

Results of registrations processed through its Active.com site show a significant increase in the number of people committing to participate in running events.

  • The number of people registered to participate in running events held in 2009 increased 15.45% over the previous year.
  • Average growth in online registration for running events was 22.9%.
  • Over 72% of running events in 2009 experienced growth in online registration over the previous year.

In addition to seeing an increase in online registrations for running events, Active Network also saw a 150% increase in sales of its ActiveTrainer running training plans in 2009. ActiveTrainer.com provides hundreds of online running, triathlon, cycling, walking and general strength and fitness training tools and plans created by top professionals in their sport.

Our Active Network data shows that more people than ever want to live a healthier lifestyle, and registering to participate in a running event is a commitment to do so, said Alan Cole, vice president of Active Networks Media + Marketing division. More importantly, people are also taking the necessary steps to train properly for these running events by downloading our training plans or seeking advice from others on our Active.com community boards. Completing a 10K, half marathon or even a full marathon is not out of reach for anyone willing to dedicate him or herself.
