Sales of Outdoor Products increased 1.5 percent in fiscal June to $1,046.9 million according to the latest monthly sales report from OIA VantagePoint™. Outdoor Hardgoods continued its solid sales growth for the month, while Apparel and particularly Footwear continued to struggle. The National Accounts Internet and Discount/Mass trade channels once again provided the strongest growth.

Outdoor Apparel sales increased 1.9 percent to $190.5 million for the five-week period ended July 6, 2013, a slight improvement from prior months. Continued weakness in Apparel sales was driven primarily by declines in Active and Sportswear Bottoms and Outerwear. Active and Sportswear Tops, along with Raingear saw slight increases in sales for the month.

Outdoor Footwear sales continued the negative trend from the last two months, down 9.4 percent in June to $265.8 million. Most Footwear categories declined, particularly Outdoor Sandals, which typically makes up a large proportion of Outdoor Footwear sales this time of year. On a more positive note, Technical Hiking and Outdoor Trail Shoes posted positive growth for the month.

Sales of Outdoor Hardgoods increased 8.5 percent to $590.6 million, up from 3.3 percent growth for fiscal May. Most Hardgoods categories increased over the comparable month last year, with the exception of Outdoor Electronics and Bicycles/Cycling Products, which each saw single-digit declines. Sales of Camping Equipment, which made up about 30 percent of all Outdoor Hardgoods sales for the month, increased by high-single-digits as camping season is in full swing.

The National Accounts Internet and Discount/Mass channels continue to gain share of Outdoor Product sales. National Accounts Internet accounted for 8.2 percent of all Outdoor Product sales (up from 5.8 percent in June 2012) while Discount/Mass Retailers accounted for 6.3 percent of sales (up from 5.0 percent in June 2012).
