Robert Espinoza, owner of Fleet Feet Sports Savannah, has passed away suddenly of an undisclosed cause. In a statement, Fleet Feet Sports said, “Robert made an undeniable impact on the local community since opening his doors in 2002. He embodied what it meant to be a local owner and business leader deeply committed to building a thriving and passionate running community.”

Fleet Feet's statement added, “The outpouring of support that we have seen is reflective of how many people he touched and influenced not only in Savannah, but also around the country. Our thoughts are with Robert's wife Cookie, as well as his staff, his family, and the entire community of Savannah.”

Espinoza, 54, died at his home on June 25. He was also the director of numerous local running events, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Critz Tybee Run Fest and the Tunnel to Towers Run. The Savannah Morning News & SavannahNow.com did a cartoon in homage to Espinoza's efforts in the community.

On Fleet Feet Sports Savannah's Facebook page, a post read, “It is with a very heavy heart that I write this sad news. Robert Espinoza–son, brother, father, husband, Fleet Feet Sports Savannah owner and my dear friend, passed away today. We can never hope to do for this town what he did, but we will strive to put our best foot forward, in our attempt to support and strengthen his legacy. Please keep Robert's family in your thoughts and prayers, and as Robert would say, “grind now, shine later.” We love and miss you, Robert; we are all better people for having known you. -Chris Ramsey and the rest of the Fleet Feet Savannah family.”

Services will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church at 10 a.m. on Friday. The church is located at 4625 Waters Avenue, in Savannah. Attendees to the celebration of his life are invited to dress in “Robert formal” attire, including running shoes and excluding ties.

The family requests any remembrances be sent in his memory to Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia (www.komencoastalgeorgia.org).
