Marking the richest contract in college sports, Nike reached an agreement to replace Adidas as the uniform sponsor for the University of Michigan. The new Nike deal will last until 2027, with options to extend the deal to 2031.

The school's Adidas deal, entered in 2007, expires July 31, 2016. Prior to signing with Adidas, Michigan had been with Nike since 1994.

As the official athletic provider, Nike will supply all 31 of U-M's athletics programs with uniforms, footwear, apparel and equipment. Nike also will collaborate throughout the agreement on innovation initiatives in sports technology, design and best practices, including student internships at Nike headquarters and community events.

The agreement includes use of the Jordan Brand “Jumpman” apparel and footwear for men's and women's basketball.

“This decision, this partnership is about more than Michigan athletics,” said Jim Hackett, Michigan’s interim director of athletics. “At the core, it is about our University community and it is about two great names reuniting for an opportunity that speaks to more than uniforms and apparel.”

Hackett told reporters that the contract was the largest in the nation. The university had twice previously set the industry standard for athletic footwear, apparel and equipment deals in 1994 and 2007.

“The University of Michigan ranks high among the world's great institutions of higher learning and enjoys a rich, tradition-laden history in college sports. Nike is especially proud to partner with the Wolverines and have the opportunity once again to work with Michigan student-athletes, coaches and staff. We eagerly look forward to bringing out the best in each other,” said Joaquin Hidalgo, VP and general manager, Nike North America.

In January 2014, Adidas saw a setback after losing Notre Dame to Under Armour. On the positive side, Adidas last year reached agreements with Arizona State and the University of Miami, both previously with Nike.
