Newton Running, based in Boulder, CO, signed an agreement to retain Breakaway, a Boston-based marketing firm on June 15. Breakaway is charged with developing a new marketing strategy, conducting a rebranding process and redesigning Newton Running’s print collateral and website, www.newtonrunning.com, as well as its yet-to-be launched consumer-education website, www.naturalrunning.com.

“Our staff;s dedication and belief in our technology has brought Newton Running to the forefront of the athletic-footwear market,” says Newton Running President Keith Simmons. “Breakaway’s strategic and creative acumen combined with our in-house grassroots marketing efforts will certainly take us to a new level.”

The newly assembled in-house grassroots marketing team enhances Newton Running’s presence at race expos, in-store events such as Newton Natural Running form clinics and Newton Natural Running Coaching Certification Programs, and promotes its broad team of athletes and sponsored events.

“Newton Running is poised to become a brand that you look back on in 10 years and realize it was ahead of its time,” says Scott Maney, Breakaway’s chief creative officer. “They use science to challenge conventional thinking by throwing the equivalent of a large rock into the running-footwear pool and well help accelerate the resulting ripple.”

Bringing additional deep industry insight to the project is Breakaway’s managing partner, Dennis Baldwin, the former chief marketing officer for Reebok.

The partnership with Breakaway comes on the heels of a June 3 agreement that Newton Running is receiving a significant investment from Boston-based Fireman Capital Partners.

Breakaway’s clients include Velcro, IdeaPaint, Redbox, Aurora Organic Dairy, Mission Athletecare and Rue La La.
