New Mexico is the most recent entrant into the contest to take over Outdoor Retailer hosting duties after the trade show leaves Salt Lake in 2018.

Senator Martin Heinrich wrote a letter to the president of Outdoor Retailer owner Emerald Expositions that stated: “As you solicit proposals for a new venue to host the Outdoor Retailer trade show, I would urge you to give strong consideration to the state of New Mexico. New Mexico’s vibrant and vast public lands are a vital part of the state’s culture and economy, and New Mexico has a tradition of stakeholders coming together to support conservation and the outdoor recreation industry.”

The letter identifies New Mexico as a champion of public lands and the home 68,000 outdoor industry jobs resulting in $6.1 billion in yearly spending.

Colorado, Oregon and Montana have also lobbied to land the trade show, with adequate capacity – the show is already straining the limits of the 675,000-square-foot Salt Palace – and proximity to demo terrain emerging as considerations.

The Request for Proposal (RFP) process will close in early May.
