Nebraska Cycling & Fitness in Columbus, NE has closed after 42 years in operation as the owners, Dick and Cindy Vandenberg, retire.
The store closed on July 3, according to a Facebook post from Dick Vandenberg, who has owned the business since 2004.
Nebraska Cycling & Fitness first opened on January 1, 1984, although the physical building itself has been home to a bicycle shop since the 1940s
According to local reports, Dick Vandenberg was unable to find a buyer to take over operations. The closure will leave Columbus without a bike shop.

Today, Friday July 3, 2026 will be our last day in business.
Nebraska Cycling & Fitness is closing forever, as I am retiring.
Please don’t feel sorry for us but, feel sorry for Columbus as there, will after 80 years, be no bicycle shop in town as we’ve tried for 3 years to sell the business with no success.
I want to also thank all my customers, friends and venders, that have supported us for the last twenty-one and half years, as we couldn’t have done it without you.
You all will be greatly missed.
