Big box retailing veteran Richard Markee has resigned from Dorel Industries Inc.'s board of directors effective June 30 in order to focus on his personal business interests.


Markee currently serves as executive chairman and chairman of the board of The Vitamin Shoppe. Markee was Chief Executive Officer of the company from September 2009 to March 2011 and was instrumental in enabling the company to go public in late October 2009. He has served a non-executive chairman of the Board of Directors of the company since 2007 and has been a member of the company’s Board of Directors since 2006.

 

Markee also remains a director of Collective Brands Inc., which recently agreed to be acquired for $2 billion by a consortium comprised of Wolverine World Wide, Inc., Blum Capital Partners and Golden Gate Capital.

 

Prior to joining The Vitamin Shoppe, Markee was the president of Babies “R” Us from 2004 to November 2007 and vice chairman of Toys “R” Us, Inc. from 2003 to November 2007. Markee also served as interim CEO of Toys “R” Us, Inc. and its subsidiaries from July 2005 to February 2006. Prior to joining the Toys “R” Us organization, Markee was a vice president of Target Stores.

 

Markee has been a director of Dorel since 2008. The resignation takes effect June 30th. Through its ownership of Cycling Sports Group, Dorel owns the Cannondale, Sugoi, Schwinn, GT and Mongoose bicycle brands.
