Macy’s Inc plans to close two fulfillment centers and a store delivery and customer returns facility in Connecticut in March, laying off more than 1,000 workers.

The affected warehouses include two in Cheshire, CN, at 475 Knotter Drive and 181 W. Johnson Avenue, and one in South Windsor, CN, at 301 Governors Highway. News of the pending closures was noted in letters from Macy’s to the State Department of Labor and the Mayors of South Windsor and Cheshire.

The notices were filed as required by the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. Macy’s, which has been closing stores to improve profitability, has issued no further comment.

Macy’s said the Cheshire fulfillment center occupies the two facilities in town, and that 993 jobs will be permanently eliminated as part of the closures. According to the notice, the layoffs will take place between March 14 and August 29, “based on the employee’s shift and classification.”

Cheshire’s Town Manager Department stated, “The Town of Cheshire is deeply saddened by Macy’s decision to close its Logistics Fulfillment Center, resulting in the elimination of nearly 1,000 jobs.  Macy’s has been a valued member of our community since 1986 and has consistently been one of Cheshire’s top ten employers, making this a significant loss for our town.

“Our thoughts are with the employees and families impacted by this decision. The Town has been in contact with Macy’s management, the Northwest Regional Workforce Board and the Connecticut Department of Labor to coordinate assistance for affected workers, including plans for a job fair and access to employment and transition resources.

“Cheshire remains committed to supporting impacted employees and will continue working with our regional and state partners during this transition.”

In South Windsor, Macy’s said it will close its store delivery center and its customer returns center.

The job eliminations will be permanent and take effect on March 14, 2026, according to the letter. The notice includes a list of eliminated job titles and states 57 employees will be affected, including 20 warehouse employees.
