Luxottica Group S.p.A. has been cleared to obliterate almost 144,000 pairs of counterfeit Ray-Ban glasses, uncovered during a raid of a Chinese distributor. The Milan-based maker of fashion and sports eyewear received a final order by the Consumer Protection Center of the Sharjah’s emirate (United Arab Emirates) to destroy the 143,700 pairs of sunglasses.

The glasses were found at the local distributor of the China Optical Center. The distributor also was forced to pay a fine of $4,000, or less than 3 cents per pair. If it is caught counterfeiting again, it could be forced to close down for up to six months, according to UAE trademark law.
