According to Golf Datatech, golf rounds played on a national level were up 8.4 percent during May 2012 over May 2011. Public access play was up 9.3 percent and private course activity was up 5.1 percent. There were 3,611 contributing golf courses used in the report.

By region, the biggest gain was seen in East North Central, up 25.5 percent; followed by West North Central, ahead 12.0 percent; Mountain, 9.8 percent; Mid-Atlantic, 5.9 percent; Pacific, 5.5 percent; and South Central, 5.1 percent. The two declining regions were New England, down 0.1 percent; and South Atlantic, 1.8 percent.

Year-to-date rounds played in the U.S. through May are up 15.9 percent.
