Garmin entered a partnership with MTN in Ghana, launching a series of fitness watches for the region and its communities. About five different activity trackers make up the line.

As part of the collaboration, the purchase of a Garmin watch comes with a free bundle of MTN Ghana data.

Walter Mech, Garmin MD for Sub-Saharan Africa, told Tech Crunch that the expansion is part of the company’s move to tap a growing fitness market in Africa. “We’ve had a strong presence with our GPS tools products … but less emphasis on our health and wellness lines, so we started to look around for new countries and distribution models,” said Mech.

In addition to fitness devices, some of the Garmin offerings in Ghana will pair with smart devices and link to text messages and emails.

The Garmin product range brought to Ghana will includes the vivoFit 3 (pictured above), vivoMove, vivoSmart, vivoActive, Fenix 3 and a Garmin Index smart scale that measures weight, body mass index, body fat/water percentage, bone and muscle mass.
