Galyan's Trading Company, Inc. reported net sales for the third quarter were $147.7 million, representing a 13.8 percent increase over the same period last year. store sales declined 5.7% for the third quarter.

Higher comparable store sales in athletic apparel and the equipment categories of snow sports, racquet sports and baseball were more than offset by softness in outdoor and casual apparel and outdoor equipment.

For the first nine months of fiscal 2003, net sales increased to $440.9 million, representing a 14.4 percent gain over the same period last year. Comparable store sales declined 6.6 percent for the first nine months of 2003.

Robert B. Mang, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Company, commented, “Sales trends for the months of August and September were significantly better than our previous quarter, however, record warm temperatures throughout most of our markets dramatically impacted results in our outdoor business in the month of October. As our merchandise and marketing strategies take effect, and colder weather prevails in our markets, we expect improved sales trends for the fourth quarter.”
