Two major sports trade organisations have signed an agreement that will see them work together on initiatives that promote physical activity throughout Europe.  The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) and ACES, the association that delivers the European Capital of Sport Awards, will collaborate on a range of activities for a minimum of 10 years.

FESI and ACES have committed to developing and rolling out a sustained programme designed to instil a culture of sporting participation across Europe.  The work will target individuals and communities, with both organisations mobilising the sports industry, and wider sporting community, to participate and contribute to the work for the benefit of all.  Among other things, the project will involve the organisation of events that help create a sporting culture and the promotion of local, national and international policies that are sport-friendly, with a particular focus on young people and social inclusion.

Alberto Bichi, Secretary General of FESI, comments: “As a society, we need to break the vicious cycle of physical inactivity in Europe.  The sporting goods industry is determined to play its role in tackling what is now a major issue in every country.  FESI is delighted to have signed this agreement with ACES and together we will develop some exciting and impactful initiatives.  I believe that the long term nature of this partnership gives a strong indication of the high level of importance that both organisations attach to tackling the challenges ahead in encouraging citizens in Europe to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.”

Hugo Alonso, Secretary General of ACES, adds: “ACES and FESI share many common cultural and social values in relation to sports and physical activity.  We are both committed to promoting good practice in encouraging participation in Europe as we believe that this is in the best interests of everyone in society.  Together, we will collaborate on new projects, institutional relations and other initiatives designed to get more people active.”

The agreement was signed at a recent meeting between the two organisations and takes immediate effect.  Details about projects that will be rolled out as part of the collaboration will be communicated in due course.
