For the third year in a row, Deuter has produced a specialty crafted medical backpack to help the volunteer and staff doctors associated with the meditibet program, as well as volunteer hours from the staff in Germany. Deuter strongly supports this program's mission and the people behind it. We invite anyone with the time to read this article to join our efforts and together we all can make a greater difference. Like many the outdoor companies, Deuter holds a special place for the Tibetan people, their challenges and their awe inspiring and soulful environment.

Meditibet is a registered association located in Munich Germany. It was founded in 2000 and as a NGO (Non Government Organization) with the aim to provide basic medical care in regions with Tibetan culture. Their most important goal is to support and to protect the Traditional Tibetan medicine. To pursue this goal meditibet brings together Tibetan and Western medicine. By cooperation of these two systems, where both are regarded as independent health care systems, a health service can be established in regions with Tibetan culture. Tibetan medicine is very good in treating patients with chronic and psychosomatic diseases, but little is known about the treatment of acute diseases and injuries; in these cases western medicine is very helpful. Meditibet doctors and nurses are working in villages and monasteries located in Solu Khumbu far from public hospitals.

Since its foundation meditibet supports the following projects.

  • Building of health posts at Buddhist Monasteries
  • Support of existing health posts
  • Treatment of patients by Western doctors
  • Demonstration of Western medicine to health Post Workers and Tibetan doctors
  • Supply of medical instruments and drugs
  • Supply of necessary goods (cloths, shoes, glasses etc.)

Goals for 2003

  • support the Health Posts in Junbesi
  • Building of a Tibetan Medical School in Thupten Choling
  • Building of a Tibetan Clinic in Namche Bazaar
