City Sports announced its participation in the National Red Bull Flugtag in Washington, D.C. this weekend, representing Boston as the city's sole competitor at the unique event.

The D.C. event takes place on Saturday, September 21 at National Harbor's Southpointe shoreline as part of a one-day, five-city competition where teams from around the country build original, human-operated “flying machines” and pilot them off a 30-foot ramp into water. The inventive spectacle draws tens of thousands of spectators each year, and is covered nationally by media including ESPN, The Huffington Post, Maxim and more.

The City Sports team craft – “The Flying Tee” – reflects the brand's most iconic symbol (the City Sports t-shirt) while also paying tribute to its home city, with a #BostonStrong hashtag on the wing. To commemorate both the flight and those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings this past April, the brand is selling special-edition Flugtag t-shirts produced by Chillybear with 100 percent of the profits to benefit The One Fund.

“We are so thrilled to take part in the National Red Bull Flugtag and dedicate our inaugural flight to The One Fund,” said Karin Piscitelli, director of marketing at City Sports. “As Boston's sole participant, we're both honored and humbled to represent our hometown and pay tribute to its resilient spirit on such a fun, national stage.”

Now in its 21st year, the National Red Bull Flugtag (or “flying day”) will stream its DC event live on the official Red Bull Flugtag USA website on the day of the event. A panel of celebrity judges will take three criteria into account in deciding who makes the podium: distance flown, creativity of the craft and the team's showmanship on stage. Spectators will also have the opportunity to chime in for their favorite team via SMS voting to select the People's Choice.
