According to local reports, Callaway Golf Company plans to shut down operations at its golf ball manufacturing plant in Gloversville, NY. The closing will leave approximately 120 employees out of work with Callaway intending to take its production overseas, according to the reports. The closure marks the second golf industry company to close down domestic golf ball production after Amer Sports' Wilson Golf business shuttered its plant in Tennessee in December 2007.
The closure of the Callaway plant will reportedly take place on July 31, 2008 after approximately 20 years in operation. For Callaway, the decision to end operations at the plant likely offers a discount in both production and shipping costs as it continues to focus on international sales becoming at least half of overall revenues.
