A California lawmaker has proposed a law that would require children to use helmets while snow skiing, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The bill would require children under 18 to wear a helmet. If they don't and are caught, their parents would face a $25 fine.

Bill sponsors cited studies showing helmets can cut in half the risk of serious head injuries in children 15 and younger.

The California Ski Industry Association has pledged its support, the AP reported.

The bill is still weeks away from any discussion.

Ski helmets have been among the faster growing winter sports categories in recent years. While some of the growth has been spurred by fatal celebrity ski accidents, the spread of iPods has also greatly fueld sales.
