The British Footwear Association (BFA) appointed Ian Cartwright as its new chief executive officer. Cartwright is currently chief operating officer at Mahabis, the London-based maker of slippers, where he leads operational and commercial transformation to support growth and long‑term sustainability.
Over his 30-year career, Cartwright has also held roles at Calla Ltd., Royal Albartross, Seven Feet Apart, Hudson Shoe Agencies, and Base London.
Cartwright succeeds Richard Shetliffe, who has served as the company’s CEO for the past two years. During his tenure, Shetliffe is reported to have “played a key role in stabilizing the organization and strengthening its foundation during a period of change for both the Association and the wider industry.”
Jane Wilson, Chair of the BFA, commented, “We would like to thank Richard for his commitment and leadership at an important time for the Association. His contribution has helped prepare the BFA for its next phase, and we are grateful for his service.”
BFA said that as a long-standing member and sn active participant in its events and initiatives, Cartwright “brings first‑hand insight into the needs and priorities of the Association’s diverse membership. His appointment signals a renewed focus on delivering practical value, trusted knowledge and strong industry connections for businesses across the British footwear supply chain.”
Wilson said, “Ian brings a rare combination of strategic insight and hands‑on industry experience. He understands the realities facing footwear businesses today and the role a modern trade association must play in helping members navigate complexity, change and growth. The Board has full confidence in his appointment.”
Cartwright said, “I am proud to be appointed CEO of the British Footwear Association. The industry is facing a period of rapid change, but also a significant opportunity. I look forward to working closely with members, partners and the Board to ensure the BFA continues to provide clear value, practical support and a strong collective voice for British footwear.”
