The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. reported that total sales for February decreased 3.5% to $72.2 million compared to $74.8 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 1.6%.

James H. Baireuther, Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer, commented, “Although February sales reflect a comparable store sales decrease, we believe our inventory is well-positioned as we transition into spring merchandise assortments, supported by a strong promotional calendar. Total sales were negatively impacted by $1.4 million, reflecting the closing of four unprofitable stores at the end of fiscal 2005, and by a snow storm that hit the northeast the weekend prior to Valentine's Day. For the month, shoes, casual sportswear, children's, and men's sportswear posted sales increases. Based on early indications, customers are responding favorably to the fresh, trend-right spring offerings, particularly in misses sportswear.”
