BJ's Wholesale Club reported that sales for August 2005 increased by 12.0% to $598.0 million from $534.1 million in August 2004. On a comparable club basis, sales increased by 5.6% for the month of August, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of approximately 3.4%.

The Company provided the following additional information regarding August sales:

On a comparable club basis, sales increased in all major markets with the highest increase in the Southeast region. On the same basis, sales increased in all four weeks with the strongest increase in week three.

Excluding sales of gasoline, traffic decreased by approximately 1% and the average transaction amount rose by approximately 3%.

On a comparable club basis, sales of food increased by approximately 5% and general merchandise sales decreased by approximately 1%. Merchandise categories with the strongest sales increases compared to last year included air conditioners, beauty care, coffee, household chemicals, electronics, juices, paper products, produce, soda & water, summer seasonal and televisions. Weaker categories included computer equipment, film and battery, residential furniture, small appliances, sporting goods and video game hardware and software
