Picture it: You’re standing in front of a group, ready to give a presentation. You’ve prepared and practiced, but you still feel frazzled. You can feel the sweat starting in your armpits, then dripping down your back. All you can do is hope the sweat doesn’t show through your shirt.
We’ve all been there. Whether it’s pre-presentation jitters, nervous sweats, or even just a hot day or hard workout causing you to perspire, there are moments when you’d rather not show the world you’re sweating.
Many people feel this way: In 2025, The LYCRA Company (parent company of the COOLMAX® brand) worked with the creative agency VML to survey more than 2,500 people around the globe, ages 18-59. The survey asked what consumers want from apparel, including their frustrations as well as purchase drivers. Across demographics, sweat was the #1 pain point. From sweating in stressful situations to visible sweat stains to the sticky feeling left behind by perspiration, consumers said, loud and clear, they’d had enough.
What they want came through just as strongly: clothes that make them feel good, inside and out. Roughly 60% of respondents said they choose garments to help them “feel presentable” in their appearance, 54% said it’s important that garments help them feel good about themselves and maximize their confidence, and 47% said they look for clothes that keep them cool. Taken together, the message was obvious — people want performance and confidence in equal measure.
With that data in hand, the team working on the COOLMAX® brand decided to find a solution.
COOLMAX CloakFX™ Fiber: A Sweat-Masking Powerhouse
The original COOLMAX® fiber already scores points in the sweat-management department; its core benefit is a cool and dry wear experience powered by specially channeled fibers that wick moisture away from the body to the surface of the fabric where it dries quickly. The next logical evolution? Sweat masking.
It took tinkering, testing, and collaboration, but ultimately the team working on the COOLMAX® brand achieved its goal: a specialty fiber that delivers moisture management, cooling — and no more sweat marks. They called it COOLMAX CloakFX™ fiber, because its clever light-refraction technology “cloaks” the appearance of sweat.
The fiber works by changing the way we perceive light. When a fabric gets wet, the human eye perceives a change in the fabric’s shade due to how light is reflected. COOLMAX CloakFX™ fiber counters this with an optical masking effect — it keeps the level of reflected light steady even when the fabric is damp. As a result, the color looks consistent. The wearer still sweats — there’s no interference with the body’s natural sweating process — but no one can tell. And that helps deliver confidence and peace of mind.
“Consumers are more willing to talk about bodily functions now, but they still have anxiety and embarrassment around how those things are perceived by others,” said Tara Maurer-Mackay, product category director, branded specialty products, at The LYCRA Company. “With COOLMAX CloakFX™ fiber, the goal is confidence. Whatever the reason you’re sweating, nobody needs to know.”
The Future of Performance Fabrics
COOLMAX CloakFX™ fiber works in a range of fabrics and garment types, setting up a future where visible sweat marks are much less common.
For each mill that adopts the fiber, the experts at the COOLMAX® brand work with fabric makers to perfect their collections before garments ever reach consumers. That hands-on approach pays off in versatility: the fiber performs in both knits and wovens and can be blended with a range of other fibers. It provides benefits to activewear and ready-to-wear garments, as well as performance wovens and workwear. In wovens, it also prevents garments from looking see-through when wet — a value-add for many active people. And because the technology is integrated right into the fiber itself, its “sweat-cloaking” magic holds up through repeated wear and washing, so consumers can count on it lasting.
That’s not the only thing this fiber has going for it. In the right fabric constructions, COOLMAX CloakFX™ fiber can provide higher UPF protection than conventional polyester fibers. Plus, 100% of the polyester in COOLMAX CloakFX™ fiber is recycled and GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified.
How’s that for a multipurpose fiber solution and 360-degree service?
