The ASTM International board of directors unanimously voted to name Tim Brooke, ASTM International’s vice president of laboratory service and certification, as the new president and chief operating officer of the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI), an ASTM International affiliate. Brooke assumed the new role on Nov. 1 and is retaining his existing title.
Brooke replaces Pat Gleason, who will retire from SEI in early 2020 after a 25-year career in certification as SEI’s first president.

“Pat Gleason’s decades-long legacy in certification is a testament to her leadership and dedication to manufacturers and laboratories as well as front-line workers, athletes, and consumers who rely on safe, well-performing products,” according to Katharine Morgan, ASTM International president. “SEI is well-positioned for the future in the hands of Tim Brooke, who already has a deep understanding of our growing footprint in certification.”

The ASTM International board also approved the following slate of SEI board members:

  • Bradley Sant, chair, American Road & Transportation Builders Association,
  • Irving Scher, Guidance Engineering and Applied Research,
  • Jeffrey Vincoli, Progressive Safety Management,
  • Patrick Morrison, International Association of Fire Fighters, and
  • Karen Lehtonen, LION Group.

As part of the transition, SEI employees Steve Sanders and Tricia Hock have assumed increased responsibilities, while Anna Seiple has been promoted. SEI has also hired two additional staff to prepare the organization for future growth.
In 2019, SEI debuted new certification programs for chest protectors, polo helmets, baseballs, and less lethal aerosols, working with ASTM International and the National Operating Committee on Standards For Athletic Equipment.
