Anchor Blue to Close

Anchor Blue Inc., the Corona, CA-based denim retailer owned by Sun Capital Partners, has closed its corporate offices and is in the process of liquidating its stores.

The retailer, which sells youth-focused denim, casual wear and some sandals, filed for bankruptcy in May 2009 and closed dozens of locations but was able to emerge by August 2009. It currently operates about 111 stores, of which 71 are in California.

Anchor Blue's origins dated back to 1947, when two brothers founded Miller's Surplus in Los Angeles. It changed its name to Millers Outpost in 1972 and reached more than 300 stores nationwide by 1989. Anchor Blue began as an in-store brand name in 1981 and later replaced the Millers Outpost moniker.
