Alterra Mountain Co. has confirmed reports that it had laid off an unspecified number of workers following a subpar 2025-26 ski season for the industry.

An internal e-mail sent Tuesday and obtained by the Denver Business Journal from KSL Capital Partners CEO Eric Resnickl said that Alterra had said “goodbye to a number of colleagues across the company,” affecting teams in its shared services functions and destinations. He added that the company had worked to keep the number as low as possible through attrition and by eliminating open positions.

Denver-based KSL Capital Partners is the co-founder and co-owner of Alterra.

In the e-mail, Resnick said he was reaching out “on behalf of the office of the CEO.” Alterra has been without a CEO since March, when Jared Smith stepped down after leading the ski resort operator since June 2021.

Kristin Rust, spokesperson for Alterra, said in a media statement to the Denver Post, “This week Alterra Mountain Company made changes across a number of departments, mostly in corporate services, that impacted some full-time, year-round team members. The changes included open roles which we chose not to fill and were spread across Denver, remote employees, and some of our resorts. These decisions were not made lightly, and it is incredibly difficult to part with even a single member of our talented and passionate team.”

Rust said that as a private company, Alterra would not be releasing further information about “employee matters,” including how many workers were affected.

The news follows a particularly challenging 2025–26 U.S. ski season in North America, marked by record-high temperatures and light snowfall across the West.

Headquartered in Denver, Alterra’s properties include Steamboat, Winter Park and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado; Palisades Tahoe, Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain, Big Bear Mountain Resort and Snow Valley in California; Stratton Mountain and Sugarbush Resort in Vermont; Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia; Tremblant in Quebec and Blue Mountain in Ontario, Canada; Crystal Mountain in Washington; Schweitzer in Idaho; Deer Valley Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah; CMH Heli-Skiing & Summer Adventures and Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing in British Columbia.
