The Alterra Mountain Company Community Foundation (Foundation) has appointed Robert Foley as executive director. He is expected to advance the Foundation’s mission and oversee its core programs supporting mental health initiatives in Alterra’s mountain communities.
The Foundation reportedly focuses on supporting mental health initiatives in its mountain communities. The company said it provides resources, tools and solutions to address and mitigate challenges and reduce stigma around mental health, and provides an avenue to alleviate hardships, with the intention to create an environment for all to survive and thrive.
“Robert joins the Foundation with multiple decades of experience in nonprofit leadership and community-centered philanthropy, as well as extensive work with behavioral health systems within rural and urban communities,” the company said in a media release. “In addition to his recent work at The Colorado Trust addressing housing, food and mental/behavioral health in a range of under-resourced communities, he previously served as senior project director at the CDC Foundation. Robert previously also worked as chief program officer for the National Indian Health Board, supporting organizational strategy, program growth, and national partnerships to advance Tribal health, public health and behavioral health policies and systems.”
Prior to these roles, Foley served as president & CEO of the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, and dedicated his early career to effective health prevention at the Denver STD/HIV Prevention Training Center and the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research at Colorado State University.

In a LinkedIn post, Foley added, “The Foundation is working to ensure that those who work, live, and play in our mountain communities have opportunities to truly thrive in those settings that are physically beautiful, economically complex, and socially enticing. I am excited to bring my more than 25 years of nonprofit and philanthropic leadership experience to a new organization with such a wonderful and needed mission, and to partner with Alterra Mountain Company to bring it to life.”
Originally established as a public charity inspired by Alterra Mountain Company to provide financial support to mountain communities in times of need, the Foundation now also provides assistance through a variety of grant-making offerings and direct programming – including Mountain Community Screenings, Specialized Psychotherapies, Behavioral Health Access, a Mental Health Toolkit, and Emergency Relief and Hardship Assistance – and will soon debut a new Behavioral Health System Improvement Toolkit for mountain communities.
