MAC Sporting Goods (McLendon Athletic Center) in Montgomery, AL, is closing after 57 years. A Facebook post indicated that owners, Billy and Margie McLendon, are retiring. The closing was also confirmed in a post by WSFA 12.
The store, at 400 N Eastern Blvd., began going-out-of-business sales on January 31.
On its Facebook page, MAC Sporting Goods describes itself as “the oldest sporting goods store in Montgomery” specializing in baseball, softball, football, running shoes, and dancewear.
Dancewear, another business the couple owned at 400 North Eastern Blvd. in Montgomery, is also closing.
In a social media post, the McLendon family noted that a deal to sell the business fell through and is asking if anyone is interested in acquiring either business to reach out to them.

An Important Announcement
To our AMAZING customers and community — this is not an easy message to share. After much thought and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors, to both businesses, effective this Saturday, January 31st.
BILLY AND MARGIE ARE RETIRING!!!
We could not have made it 57 years in this industry without YOU!! We thought we had a buyer in place, to keep the store going, but unfortunately that fell through. And we are heartbroken for our loyal customers.
We kindly ask that all gift cards or store credits be used prior to our closing.
Your continued support during this difficult time would mean the world to us. Every purchase truly helps as we work to clear out our inventory and bring this chapter to a close. And what a chapter it has been! This is definitely not an easy goodbye!
