Nigeria will end its 11-year association with Nike and return to Adidas, after reportedly agreeing an $8.5 million-a-year equipment deal that the Nigeria Football Federation says is the biggest in African football.
Nigeria Football Federation officials at a press conference on Friday in Abuja confirmed the Adidas deal is valued at $4.5 million in cash, supplemented by an additional $4 million worth of equipment and kits for the national teams. The agreement also includes a 20 percent royalty on merchandise sales.
Adidas became the kit supplier before the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations that was won by Nigeria and outfitted the team for its first appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, before switching to Nike later that year. Adidas returned as kit sponsor from 2004 until 2014, including outfitting the team’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations victory.
