Adidas AG expects to begin using 3D printers or similar additive technology to manufacture custom footwear at “Speedfactories” in Europe and the United States by 2020 under a partnership announced Tuesday with the German automation company Manz AG

In the future local shoe production in Speedfactories will enable Adidas to manufacture shoes at the consumer's location, in a customized, resource-friendly and cost-effective way, said Eric Liedtke, executive board member Global Brands, Adidas AG.

“Speed wins in every sport,” said Liedtke. “And speed is a competitive advantage in our industry, too. Therefore, we are looking forward to working closely with Manz AG as part of our Speedfactory initiative that will allow us bring production closer to our consumer.”

Manz Founder and
CEO Dieter Manz said the collaboration with Adidas marks his company's entry into additive manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing.

future-oriented technology takes on an even more important role,” said
Manz. “I see a good development potential for our company in this area.
