Adidas America Inc. appears to be making moves to decentralize some sales operations while moving customer service and credit functions from its Portland, OR headquarters to its expanded facilities in Spartanburg, SC over the next six months.

In a statement issued Thursday, Patrik Nilssen, the latest president of Adidas America, said that a number of Portland and field-based roles would be moved to regional offices in Dallas, New York and Chicago in an effort to get closer to the customer.  He also said more jobs would be added in Spartanburg and Pittsburgh, PA, the home of Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The company indicated fewer than 25 layoffs were expected. The moves are part of a reorganization plan called “New Beginning.”

Last year, adidas announced a major expansion of its distribution center in Spartanburg. The company is shifting distribution of adidas brand apparel and Reebok brand footwear and apparel to Spartanburg by 2009.
