Nike has suspended its contract with Oscar Pistorius, the South African sports star who has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend. Nike said in a short statement, “We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Before the statement, a Nike spokesman had indicated that Nike had no plans to use Pistorius in future campaigns.

Pistorius was the first amputee athlete to run at the world
championships in 2011, and he made history competing in the London
Olympics last year. Pistorius received a prominent part of
Nike’s ads around the Olympics.

Oakley also suspended its contract with Pistorius.
